As we age, it's common to feel like our joints aren't as strong as they once were. Whether you’re dealing with an injury that hinders your movement or osteoarthritis caused by age-related wear and tear, joint pain can significantly affect your daily life. Instead of relying on painkillers or becoming sedentary to cope with the discomfort, consider a healthier, more natural solution: physical therapy.
To understand how physical therapy can help with joint issues, it’s important to recognize the underlying causes. Joint pain and stiffness can stem from various factors, including:
Acute Injuries: Damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, or joints from sprains or strains can lead to inflammation, which is both painful and immobilizing.
Chronic Conditions: Overuse from sports, work, or hobbies can gradually lead to conditions like tendinitis or bursitis, causing persistent soft tissue pain.
Immobilization: Extended periods of immobility, such as having an arm in a sling, can result in adhesive capsulitis, commonly known as “frozen shoulder,” making the joint unusable.
Osteoarthritis: This age-related degeneration of cartilage in joints is the most common cause of joint pain and stiffness.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disorder that causes painful, debilitating joint inflammation.
There are various physical therapy methods to address joint discomfort and enhance mobility. One of our skilled physical therapists will start by thoroughly assessing your condition, considering your overall health, daily activities, and specific symptoms. This evaluation helps in determining the most effective therapies, such as:
Stretching Exercises: These exercises aid in restoring injured muscles and connective tissues to their original length and range of motion. They are also effective in preventing stiffness in arthritic joints.
Joint Mobilization Techniques: These techniques help improve your pain-free range of motion and overall function. They can also break up internal scar tissue from old injuries, reducing chronic stiffness.
R.I.C.E. Protocol: For acute joint injuries, our therapists may recommend Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation to reduce pain and swelling.
At Garden State Physical Therapy in Hillsborough, NJ, our highly qualified therapists will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. Don't endure joint pain any longer—contact our office today to start your journey toward healing and relief!
